    Worship

Worship occurs at many times. We join together each week for worship at 10:00 AM on Sunday mornings. We are rich in our musical tradition. We sing using the Presbyterian Hymnals, along with an occasional contemporary worship song, or from an old Hymnal, and a variety of special music. On the Sundays that are a fifth Sunday, we have a combined jazz service with First United Methodist Church at their location (201 North Court St, Fairfield). Communion is available the second Sunday of each month.

    Prayer

Prayer is an important part of our daily lives. As a people of prayer, we pray not only during the service each week, but each and every day. We have a prayer chain, and have daily prayers of the people on Facebook. Please feel free to call the church office with any prayer requests.

    Sharing the Good News

We want to share the Good News of Jesus Christ as often as we can in every way that we can.  This includes several opportunities for joining around the table.  On the first Sunday of each month, in conjunction with the service, we offer refreshments of some sort. Sharing the Good News also includes reaching into the community through Mission Trips and working with local Service Organizations.

Church Leadership

The Rev. Joseph Phipps is the Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church where he has served for almost 12 years. Pastor Joe was born and raised in Southern California where he studied for a degree in Microbiology from Cal State Fullerton.  He spent a few years in food industry lab work and managed a bookstore – which is where he met his wife Mary; then God “hit him up side of the head” to get his attention and pointed him toward full-time ministry.  He received an MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary and has been in ordained ministry since 1992.  Joseph and Mary (yes, we know) have one son, Duncan.

Pastor Joe is a member of Fairfield Lions Club, Band Aides, Fairfield Area Community Theatre (FACT), and Fairfield Area Ministerial Association (FAMA).  He enjoys spending time with his family, reading, baseball, BBQ, and baking.

Mary Phipps is employed by FSCD where she works one-on-one with students.  She loves reading, cooking, BBQ, baseball and is a member of the FACT Board.

Betty Mayer has been serving First Presbyterian Church as organist since 2013. She has served as organist in a variety of denominations, providing music for worship in national park settings and various sized churches on instruments ranging from small field pump organs to large pipe organs. In addition to serving as organist, she has been directing the choir for a few years. Betty has directed choirs ranging from four year olds to 90 plus year olds for many years.

Betty holds a bachelor degree in music from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD and a master’s degree in music from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH. She has been a private piano teacher and has taught music in the public school for many years. Several years ago her career took a new path into being a reading interventionist and working with English Language Learners. Even though she no longer teaches music in the public school, she keeps involved in music in the church and community.

Betty and her husband Mark have resided in Fairfield since 1988 and raised two children, and music has been a big part of their family’s life.

Dawn Roemen began working as Administrative Assistant to First Presbyterian Church in January, 2005. She moved to Fairfield as a child during the summer of 1984, graduated from Fairfield High School, and received her Associates Degree from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. Prior to her employment with First Presbyterian Church, Dawn worked many years for the Motorola facility in Mt. Pleasant before they closed their doors.

Dawn is married to Greg Roemen, who works as a supervisor at Dexter-Apache in Fairfield. They have four daughters: Skyler, Kylie, Samara and Taryn; and one granddaughter, Kendyl. Outside of her work for the church, Dawn loves spending time with her family, summer BBQs, camping (glamping), working with animals, and just enjoying the simple things.
